A Short Story About Upgrading

When AutoCAD 2000 was released, there were over 400 improvements to the software. While this might be exciting to a true techno-geek, the average AutoCAD user had a hard time adjusting to the overwhelming onslaught of differences between this new software and their beloved AutoCAD R14.

The interface was new.
The way the buttons worked was different.
Plotting had changed radically.

The learning curve was so extreme, that most users didn't upgrade right away. Sure they might have installed it and played around with it a little, but "real work" required going back to their familiar R14. Eventually, the software was accepted as mainstream, but not without Autodesk learning a valuable lesson: Customers are more successful with small regular updates than with large infrequent ones.

Thus, the Autodesk yearly release cycle was born.

Subscription Today

Today, Autodesk releases it's products on a yearly cycle. Most titles have a new release in the spring - and many products have maintenance updates throughout the year. Accepting upgrading as a constant yet gradual process is the first step toward realizing that Autodesk Subscription makes sense.

The Autodesk Unified Pricing Model

As of March 16th, 2010, upgrades from any of the three previous versions will cost 50% of the purchase price of a new license. This means that if your software is only one year old, it loses half of it's upgrade value.

This is more reason than ever to get your seats on Autodesk subscription right away!

Let's Look at Some Numbers

Mr. Smith wishes to upgrade from a standalone AutoCAD 2009 to AutoCAD 2010. Today he would expect to pay $595. Under the new pricing model, he would pay $1997.50. That's a 335% increase!

Ms. Jones wishes to upgrade from a standalone AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 to AutoCAD Civil 3D 2010. Today she would expect to pay $1095. Under the new pricing model, she would pay $3997.50. That's a 365% increase!
